Technology
In our pursuit of international competitiveness and commitment to environmental responsibility we have selected Elemental Chlorine Free technology while modernizing our front line. ITC's PSP Division is the first paper/board mill in India to adopt this technology. The facility was commissioned in September 2002 and is ahead of government regulators and norms.

Elemental Chlorine Free technology utilizes chlorine dioxide (ClO2 ) in place of chlorine (Cl2 ). Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECF) bleaching -- based on chlorine dioxide is the superior choice for pulp and paper manufacture. The science, a proven environmental track record, and strong market demand demonstrate that ECF is without rival in terms of pollution prevention, resource conservation, and product quality.

During the pulp bleaching process, chlorine tends to combine with lignin (the substance that holds the wood fibres together) to create chlorinated organics that end up in mill wastewater. In contrast, chlorine dioxide typically breaks apart the lignin, leaving behind organic compounds that are water soluble and very similar to those occurring naturally in the environment.

Benefits

Elimination of elemental chlorine in bleaching

ECF bleached pulps have a higher tear and fibre strength
Cleaner, brighter and stronger pulp
ECF products and its manufacture places a lower strain on precious forest resources
Energy efficiency
Reduction in water usage
